Contribution Guidelines

Best practices for adding and editing dakimakura entries on Dakidex

General Information

Thank you for contributing to Dakidex! These guidelines help us maintain a high-quality database of dakimakura information. Please follow them when adding or editing entries.

If you have any questions about these guidelines, feel free to reach out on our Discord server.

Any registered user can add new dakimakura entries. However, please ensure that all entries are accurate and adhere to the guidelines.

URLs and Storefronts

When adding a new dakimakura entry, it's important to provide accurate and complete product URL information:

  • Include a working URL to the product page to the dakimakura release under the "Product Links" section
  • Link to all possible storefronts where the dakimakura is or was available, if applicable over multiple releases
  • For older dakimakura that are no longer for sale, it's still valuable to include the URL where it was once available
  • You may also include links to other databases such as omiai-dakimakura.com, social media posts on X, or Pixiv pages under the "Additional Links" section
  • Even dead URLs are useful for duplicate checking and historical reference

Best Practice

If a dakimakura is sold on multiple storefronts (e.g., Booth and the circle's own website), include all URLs to make it easier for users to find and purchase the item.

Characters and Series

Properly categorizing characters helps users find dakimakura more easily:

  • Select known characters from the character search box when possible
  • If a character doesn't exist yet, you can create a new character entry
  • Original characters (OCs) should each get their own entry if they have a name
  • For the "Series" field of an OC:
    • For artist OCs: Use the name of the artist as the series
    • For store mascots: Use the store/circle name as the series
  • If an OC has no name, select "Unnamed Original Character"

Important Note

Always check if a character already exists before creating a new character entry to avoid duplicates. Search for both English and Japanese names.

Multiple Variants

Many dakimakura are released with multiple variants (different designs, NSFW/SFW versions, etc.):

  • If a daki has multiple variations sold on different URLs, they should be added as a single entry on Dakidex
  • Include all URLs for the different variants in the product entry
  • Add each variant separately in the variants section
  • Give descriptive names to variants (e.g., "NSFW Version", "Winter Version") when possible

Best Practice

Create a single comprehensive entry for a dakimakura with multiple variants rather than creating separate entries for each variant. This keeps related content together and makes browsing easier.

Images

High-quality images are essential for dakimakura entries:

  • The first image in a variant should ideally be a combined image showing both front and back of the dakimakura
  • If a combined image is not available, use the best full side image available
  • Additional images can include close-ups or alternative angles
  • Mark variants with NSFW content appropriately using the NSFW toggle
  • The first image of every variant is used for automatically generating tags, so make sure it's representative

Best Practice

When possible, upload high-resolution images directly rather than linking to external images that might be removed later. This ensures the durability of the database.

Tags

Proper tagging makes dakimakura discoverable and helps users find what they're looking for. Dakidex uses two types of tags:

  • Release-specific tags: Tags that apply to specific releases (like material tags, size restrictions, or availability limitations)
  • Main dakimakura tags: Visual and descriptive tags that apply to all variants regardless of release

For main dakimakura tags:

  • We follow Danbooru tagging guidelines as much as possible
  • Use specific, descriptive tags for visual elements, character traits, and clothing that appear in the dakimakura images
  • After submitting a new dakimakura, the system will automatically generate relevant tags based on the images and information provided
  • Do not add material tags or release-specific meta tags to main dakimakura tags - These should go in individual release entries
  • Add meta tags that apply to the dakimakura as a whole:

For release-specific tags:

Best Practice

Think about whether a tag applies to the dakimakura as a whole (visual elements, character traits) or to a specific release (material, availability, size options). This helps keep the tagging system organized and makes searches more accurate.

Material Tags

Material tags help users identify the fabric type and quality. These should be added to individual release entries, not to the main dakimakura tags:

Best Practice

If the product listing specifies a particular fabric type for a release, always include the corresponding material tag in that release entry. This is especially important for collectors who have preferences for specific fabrics.

Product Title Guidelines

The product title should be clear, concise, and represent the official name of the dakimakura:

  • Use the title provided by the store when available
  • Remove excessive information like "[New Release]" or "[Sales from XX/XX to YY/YY]" from the title
  • If no title is provided by the store, the field can be left empty and it will automatically be filled with the character name(s)
  • For event-exclusive items, you may include the event name if it's part of the official title

Example

Store listing: "[New Release] Rem & Ram Summer Beach Ver. [Available until 8/31]"
Better title: "Rem & Ram Summer Beach Ver."

Character Naming Guidelines

Consistent character naming helps users find content more easily:

  • For romanized Japanese names, use the Hepburn romanization system (Wikipedia reference)
    • Example: "桐谷マリン" should be romanized as "Kitagawa Marin"
    • Example: "大空スバル" should be romanized as "Oozora Subaru"
  • Japanese names should be written as Last Name + First Name in both English and Japanese name fields
  • Western character names should be written as First Name + Last Name
  • If a character has an official English localized name that differs from their Japanese name:
    • Use the official English name in the English name field
    • Use the Japanese name in the Japanese name field

Examples

Japanese character: "Kitagawa Marin" (English), "桐谷マリン" (Japanese)
Western character: "Lara Croft" (English), "ララ・クロフト" (Japanese)
Localized name: "May" (English), "ハルカ" (Japanese)

Icon Guidelines

When uploading icons for characters, artists, circles, or series, please follow these guidelines:

  • Icons must be Safe For Work (SFW) - Do not use NSFW imagery for any icon
  • Character icons should preferably be from any official art or source material.
  • Face-crop images are preferred for character icons - A clean headshot that clearly identifies the character
  • For circles and artists, use their official logo or avatar when available
  • Series icons should represent the series as a whole, such as the series logo or a recognizable symbol
  • Square images with good resolution work best as icons

Important Note

Icons appear throughout the site in many contexts where users may not expect NSFW content. Inappropriate icons will be removed by moderators.

NSFW Content Labeling

Proper labeling of NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content is essential to ensure appropriate content filtering:

  • All variants should be properly labeled as either SFW (Safe For Work) or NSFW
  • Mark a variant as NSFW if it contains any of the following:
    • Exposed genitals or nipples
    • Excessively erotic expressions or poses
    • Very obvious imprints or cameltoes
    • Sexually suggestive or explicit content
    • Minimal/transparent clothing that reveals intimate areas
  • When in doubt, err on the side of caution and mark the variant as NSFW
  • All variants in a dakimakura entry can have different NSFW settings (e.g., one SFW variant and one NSFW variant)

Important Note

Proper NSFW labeling helps protect users browsing in public or work environments and ensures appropriate content filtering. Consistently mislabeled content may result in moderation action.

Circle Reputation

Dakidex tracks the reputation of circles and stores to help users make informed decisions. When adding or editing entries, pay attention to the reputation of the circle:

  • Legitimate: The circle is considered trustworthy and does not use AI or steal designs.
  • Questionable: The circle may be affiliated with bootleggers, have traced designs, or engage in other shady practices. See the circle page for more details.
  • Partial AI: The circle uses AI for some of their products, but not all. AI-generated products are not allowed on Dakidex.
  • Full AI: The circle uses AI for all or most of their products. AI-generated products are not allowed on Dakidex.
  • Bootlegger: The circle is known to steal designs from other artists. Bootlegger designs are not allowed on Dakidex.

Important Note

Do not add bootlegged or AI-generated products to Dakidex. Only list official or authorized products from legitimate circles and stores. Entries from circles with mostly AI generated products or bootleggers will be removed.

Circles and Partner Circles

Dakidex tracks which circle originally released a dakimakura design and which circles later released the same design through partnerships or consignments. Proper circle attribution is important for giving credit to original creators:

  • Main Circle Attribution: The circle that releases a dakimakura design first is considered the main circle and should be attributed to the cover entry
  • Partner Circles: When the same design is released by other circles later (either through partnership, consignment, or licensing), these are added as partner circles to individual releases
  • Partner circles are associated with specific releases rather than the entire dakimakura, since different partners may sell the design at different times
  • When editing or creating entries, always check if a design has been released by multiple circles and properly attribute the original circle as the main circle
  • If you discover that the main circle attribution is incorrect, you can edit the entry to move the correct original circle to the main circle position and adjust the partner circles accordingly

Example

A dakimakura design is originally released by Circle A on their Booth store. Later, Circle B obtains a license to sell the same design on their own store.

  • Main Circle: Circle A (original release)
  • Release 1: Circle A's Booth store, marked with no partner circle
  • Release 2: Circle B's store, marked with Circle B as the partner circle

Important Note

Always research the release history of a design before adding it to Dakidex. If you're unsure which circle released a design first, ask the community on Discord or check the circle pages for release dates.

Releases and Availability

Dakidex uses a release system to track different releases of the same dakimakura over time. This allows us to track pricing changes, different storefronts, and availability periods:

  • Every dakimakura must have at least one release entry - This is required for the entry to be valid
  • Each release entry should include:
    • Release date (or mark as "Release date unknown" if not available)
    • Price and currency (if available)
    • Product URLs specific to this release
    • Tags that apply specifically to this release (see below)
    • Optional notes about this specific release
  • Add appropriate tags to each release:
  • Use the "Add New Release" button to add the most recent release first, then use "Add Old Release" for historical releases
  • For re-releases or reprints, create a new release entry with the new release date and any changed information
  • Do not leave incomplete release entries - If you start adding a release but don't complete it, either finish it or remove it before submitting

Example Usage

A dakimakura first released on Booth with A&J Lyctron material, then later re-released on the circle's own website with Shiromoufu Sakuramochi material would have two release entries:

  • Release 1 (Latest): Circle website URL, new date, new price, material:shiromoufu_sakuramochi
  • Release 2 (Old): Booth URL, original date, original price, material:aj_lyctron

Important

Release-specific tags (like material tags) should be added to individual releases, not to the main dakimakura tags. The main dakimakura tags should only contain tags that apply to all variants regardless of release.

Final Notes

Thank you for taking the time to contribute to Dakidex! By following these guidelines, you're helping to build a comprehensive and high-quality dakimakura database for the community.

Remember that entries can always be edited later if more information becomes available or if corrections are needed.

If you encounter any errors in existing entries, please report them using the "Report a mistake" button on the entry page. This helps us keep the database accurate and up-to-date.

Important

Do not add bootlegged products to Dakidex. Only list official or authorized products from legitimate circles and stores. Bootlegged entries will be removed.
